Matthew Duesbery

First Sergeant Retired Matthew Duesbery was born on 31 January 1967 in England and raised in Ottawa, Canada. Matt joined his family in the DC area around the time of the invasion of Kuwait. He was inspired to join the US military after watching the news coverage of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Matt completed basic training in 1992 and served 20 years as an Infantryman, serving in leadership positions from Team Leader to First Sergeant. Ranger Duesbery’s assignments included the 82d Airborne Divisions 504th PIR, 5th Ranger Training Brigade and First Sergeant at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Matt deployed to the Sinai as part of Multinational Force & Observers mission and later participated in operational deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq as a Platoon Sergeant in the 82d Airborne Division.

Some of Matt’s awards and decorations include two Bronze Stars, three Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, the Ranger Tab, Senior Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Combat and Expert Infantryman’s Badge.

Matt always appreciated being outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, cutting firewood, making campfires, building trails, and playing the guitar. Ranger Duesbery was an exceptional Noncommissioned Officer that remained dedicated in his service to Soldiers and the Army. Matt died 31 August 2018 at the age of 51.
