Kris Kristofferson was born on 22 June 1936, in Brownsville, Texas, into a military family. His father, (R) Major General Lars Henry Kristofferson guided him into a military career after he graduated from Pomona College and Oxford. During college, he was an excellent athlete, excelling in football, rugby, and boxing. After college, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army. Lieutenant Kristofferson continued to excel at Flight School, becoming a helicopter pilot after graduating from Jump School and Ranger Training (class 01-61). He continued his Military Career, flying helicopters, earning the rank of Captain. While assigned in Germany, Captain Kristofferson was offered an assignment, to teach at West Point. He refused to accept the assignment to the U S Military Academy, and resigned his commission in 1965, to pursue his career(s) in entertainment. Captain Kristofferson was an accomplished songwriter, singer, musician, and actor in addition to his early military career. He was recognized for his talent in music and film careers, winning awards in all fields of endeavor in which he participated. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, he also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He demonstrated his eminence in film by earning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture and being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film Songwriter. His greatest accomplishments may have come in his songwriting abilities, penning credits for "Me and Bobby McGee," "For the Good Times," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," and "Help Me Make It Through The Night," all recorded by other Artists which became Super Hits. He also wrote and performed "Why Me Lord," and "Highwayman," both reaching number 1 in the Musical Charts. |
