Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Ross Hall Message: Rangers, as some of you know, my wife works for the local newspaper, The Dahlonega Nugget. She has long covered the Camp and USMRA events and people. A while back, Col Flohr asked through LTC Lear if it was possible to have a "Ranger Corner" or something like that in the paper. At the time the paper had just changed editors and the new guy didn't know squat about Rangers. He said no. Now he's been here a while he's rethinking that. The upshot is he may go for a military tab (like an insert)every two or three months. That would include 5th RTB, USMRA, VFW, even the Vets Affairs Committee. It would be news, events, photos. USMRA could publish a calendar, or it could report on events after the fact--like the critter cookout, so we don't advertise it ahead of time.We could promote scholarships,coins, etc. I do not work for the paper, but I can help pull it all together for Sharon, get it written up, etc. What do you guys think? Do we want our information out there? |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: For Doug: Yes Doug, I can confirm that "Captain" Howard Hunt was in fact the Company Commander of Oscar Company Rangers in Alaska. He had the dubious distinction of Commanding that Company when it was Disbanded. After that, Howard Hunt accept a RIF, and was made a SSG, but retained his Commissioned Rank in the Army Reserves. He retired as either a Major or Lieutenant Colonel, and at what would have been his 30th year of service, he automatically reverted to the higher Grade for Pension Purposes. He retired from Active Duty as a SFC. |
