Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: A few quick notes then I'll get off and leave space. 1. I just got the photo from Joe Nowak and what a treasure it is. Not only the Helicopter, but the weapons that the Ranger Students are carrying. I can't say thanks enough to Joe Nowak for sharing this photo and I'm sure Joe's sending a copy e-mail to Ross Hall but just in case, so am I. It really is a great photo, and again...thanks Joe Nowak. 2. I also want to add my thanks and compliments to Ranger Rice for his comments and stories. I have looked forward to reading them everyday. I work the night shift at out local VA Hospital, and when I get off, the first thing I do is get home, fire up the computer and read the latest postings from Ranger Rice. Jan, (my wife) thinks I'm nuts! Thanks Ranger Rice for some great stories!! I especially liked the "Jack Russell" comparison with Doug Perry! 3. I completely agree!! Our Webmaster is a true hero of our association (along with Steve who's done a wonderful job with keeping this network and our association going). Our Webmaster has built a website for any/all of us to post in such a manner that no matter where we are in this world of ours, when we start banging on the computer key boards with our Ranger thumbs, in our minds and in our hearts, we are all right there....at the Ranger Camp and still with each other as we had been many times in the Club or in the Messhall just wasting out time when we were really supposed to be at home with out wives and kids...civilians don't get it, but our Webmaster does...and we owe him a great debt and our thanks. 4. Bill Breen...glad we were able to sort that Stafford story out. The Fla Camp (like us) has their own particular and peculiar stories to tell. With regrets, I have been told that "Billy Jack" has passed onto the Big Ranger, but he's always alive and well in the memories, and hearts of those of us who had him as an RI or knew him from the Fla. Camp. Steve's right, the name of the RI that wouldn't roll down his sleeves, and had all of the snakes that the story was posted about was Jutrice. I have no idea what happened to him, or where he's at now. I never heard another thing about him. 5. I just want to say that I really am looking forward to the new book coming out from Ross Hall. If it's half as good as "The Ranger Book", I'm going to buy several copies for posteritiy purposes and gifts. I really do look forward to reading it. I hope it includes a roster of Camp Members who have been inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame to include "Jack Russell" Perry!! All of them are special to me in my memories, and I served with all of them at some point in my Army career when they were on active duty or Retired but still with us in some way or another. All of the RHOF personnel aside, there are other great Rangers that I served with who are now memories in my heart, and footprints on the hills somewhere in N. Ga, that will forever be there. They don't have a photo on a wall, or a testimony to what they did, but they are in a more special place. For every Ranger that they ever touched, they are in his smile, his inner feelings of endurance, his physical strength, his ability to go the extra mile when others can't....these Rangers have built and incredible story of footsteps following footsteps and the special heart that they passed onto the next generation is their monument...their "Hall of Fame".....to all....you now have room to comment, and my thanks.....for the memories! Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: Ross: I just woke up and my fingers ain't working right yet, so I'll try again...SGM Richardson was a SGM/E-9 in rank and paygrade. He was there as the Camp SGM when I signed in for duty as Cadre in Sept 79. He left shortly after I arrived (about a year or so) and that would me that he was there at least by 78. So, sometime in 78, SGM Richardson was the SGM of Camp Merrill and was so until around 1980. All of this is accurate give or take about 6 months or so. The roster that you received from RTB is inaccurate and that would explain why I've heard before about others never hearing of SGM Richardson. As Doug Perry wrote earlier, I believe the story he mentioned is accurate. I seem to remember something about him going to NGC/ROTC after Camp Merrill, but I can't absolutely confirm that, however...NGC may have a record of him and when he arrived, and possibly where he arrived from which would be CFM. I promise Ross, your list given to you by RTB is not accurate with regards to Richardson. As far as anyone before him beginning of Quirck, I have to defer that to the ones who were there before me such as Doug Perry. |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: Hi Bill: No, Downing was a Major at the time that he came to 1/75 and he replaced Major "Rock" Hudson. Who replaced "Hog" Brown, I don't remember, I have to differ that question to Steve Hawk. Steve was in 1st Plt. |
