Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Mike Flack Message: You guys sure are bringing back some names. I hadn't heard of Heinz Ketchum in many a year. I also enjoyed the memory of Gilmore Shelly. I walked a patrol with him one time when he really chewed a student out about something and told him to sit somewhere until he told him to move. After a while, the student got Shelly's attention and it made Shelly even madder. What do you want, he whispered as loud and angry as he could. The student said, Sergeant, I'm sitting on a snake. Shelly said, well eat the damn thing then, and walked away. The student finally got smart enough to raise up so the poor snake could escape. Speaking of snakes, wasn't Judice the one in Florida who kept a room full of snakes. One night the CQ runner a very young, very scared PFC was walking some sort of security thing they did down there in the BEQ and he was armed with a pump shotgun. He heard a noise in Judice's room so he opened the door to investigate. All he could see was snakes on top of snakes. He cut loose with that shotgun and kept going until it was empty. Meanwhile, everybody in the BEQ, recently returned Vietnam veterans all, were jumping out of windows without opening them and going every which way. The next day Judice came in off patrol and found his room full of dead snakes. The ones that lived had apparently crawled away as any decent thinking snake would. He went berserk and went looking for the PFC, but somebody was smart enough to ship the kid off pronto. |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Ross Hall Message: Joe, your list is a little different than mine. I got my info from RTB, and they only list one SMG before '74, and that was back in '54. From '74, with LTC Guillory, I've got SMG Hoyt Wilson, Jones, McBroom, Quirk, Monroe, Fletcher, Hall, Miller. Then it changes '90-'92 between LTC Brownfield and Donovan, to CSM. Palacios was the first, the Edmunds, Palacios again, some guy named Joe Mattison, Nelson, Barron twice, Costen, Legg and the new guy, whose name I can't spell. And your list says ...? |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: one last "history postscript"....Major Wayne A Downing was the second Executive Officer of 1/75. He later became the Commanding Officer of 2/75....when USSOCOM started in 1984 and 3/75 was activated along with the 75th Ranger Regiment, Colonel Wayne A. Downing was first Commander of the present day Ranger Regiment. He always signed his correspondence as "The third Colonel of the Regiment"....giving historical credit to Robert Rogers and William Darby. As many know, the "WAD" later went on to Command USSOCOM as a 4 Star, and he wore a Black Beret (pre-tan beret days) signifying his long association with Ranger Units. |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Steve Hawk Message: Joe and All Yes the early days, such fond memories. When there were only two or three people below the rank of E-5. Guess who got to clean everything or go get anything needed. I still have my tubular frame ruck, stell helmet and LBE. If fact when Joe and I got there in 74 CIF at Camp Stewart was in an old WWII building. 6 years later when I left the Battalion I went to do turn-in and they could not find my records at CIF. WHy, because CIF had burnt down becasue of lightning storm. I was one of maybe 4 people who been there long enough to have no record of any issue. Steve |
