Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Mike Flack Message: I remember being in Airborne School when you had to do a minimum of six chin-ups. If you couldn't do six chin-ups, you could not handle a T-10 properly. You could die if you couldn't do six chin-ups. Then women were admitted to Airborne School and all of a sudden six chin-ups weren't as necessary as they had been. Yes, standards do change. The thought of changed, i.e. lower standards, for Ranger School is a terrible thing. Lowering standards would lower the prestige of the tab and would reduce the respect universally shown to those who wear it. Women are in combat. That is a fact of life in the military today. We need to understand and accept that. So maybe women will be admitted to the combat arms. I can live with that too. But we should not lower standards for schools or other qualifiers if or when it happens. If women meet the standards, then good for them. If not, they should be treated the same as any others who fail to meet them. |
