Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: ron rice Message: i am sorry i do not know big mac from the mtr pool. what i remember about doug p, was that he was a great ranger instructor and a fiesty dude. i believe he had more guts in that he would fight a bob cat. he loved to fight for some reason and he was not all that big. kinda like a jack russell. others i remember was co shalikashvili who later was chairman of JCS. g. shelley black fellow who had a heart attack after doing a run. i believe died in his bunk. capt tom curran a real good off. a 2lt who liked his booze and kia in vn he was and advisor and had to call in arty fire on his own cp area all were kia. we had shake and bakes in those days. some good others? the rope comm painted the water tower on one cycle break. we used bosun seats. the rope comm cleared all the brush around the 6o ft cliff area. we built the dam in the etowah for 1,2 and 3 rope bridges. one day j crump was showing off a little in his 64 427 ford in camp and some 2dlt hollered at him and told 8 to take care of it. 8 said joe consider yourself chewed out. we were working one day down by the nco club and a shave tail 2dlt (non ranger) walked by and said kinda smart like, you nco's don't come to attention and salute now. noll said ok we won't. we would not wear the follow me patch only the r tab because we did not likeft benning. they looked down on us and always got everything before we did. i don't think the mrc was forced to until '66. we had to drive all the way to ft. mac to go the comm once a month. i think it was 100 miles one way. tony always stood along the rc road and thumbed his way to work. he did not drive but we were always happy to pick hime up. he was a tobacco chewer and kept his cud in a leather pull string pouch of course someone on the r comm would hide it from him and he would cuss a little. adolph delso used to smoke cigars and many was the time he would demostrate using the knotted hand line at the r ramp w/ the g hook and climb up it with a steady stream of smoke going. he lived in a cabin up behind the ranger camp i don't recall the name of it. he was the man on the outcropping overhang who demonstrated tension climbing until one he said rice you will do it this class. that of course was at yonah. well i did it and i wasn't to bad at it. i have pictures of that. more later rlth rice |
