Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: OWENS Message: Season Cast Iron Pots: Clean all pots with a steel pad, rinse good, dry with hand towels, then place in oven on warm for a few minutes to ensure completely dry. Once dry coat the entire pan with Flax Seed Oil, its the best to use and lasts the longest. Once coated now wipe off as much as you can with paper towels, too much will make pot sticky when it comes out of the oven. Once all excess oil has been removed place in oven and bake one (1) hour at 450 to 500 degrees, you want it to get hot and you want it past to smoking point so the oil will actually dry and stick to the pot. Once done let pot cool and remove, if pot is sticky you had too much oil still on pot or oven was not hot enough, you can do this on old or new cast iron. Enjoy the results... |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: This is for Mr Ron Rice: I sure did enjoy reading your recent posting. You mention quite a few names that I am familiar with, and have known of from quite a few years ago. Some of them I never met, and others were still working at the Camp as Civilian Employees when I was first assigned there in 1979. A few others were retired and living in the area, and I would see them at Camp Merrill from time to time, usually at the NCO Club, PX or Commissary. It's interesting to note that the Mountaineering Committee was made up of "Mountaineers" and not Ranger qualified Rangers. I don't think that a lot of current Rangers understand that in those days, being a "Mountaineer" was actually a special skill identifier, and that they were assigned accordingly due to that skill identifier. These "Mountaineers" usually rotated between Ft Carson, Ft Greeley, Bad Tolz (Germany) and Camp Merrill where they were predominantly used in the capacity as Mountaineering Instructors. Movement in mountainous terrain in those days by large groups of soldiers wasn't like it is today with helicopters, so a special group of Mountaineering experts was always kept available to our Army and they spent half (or more) of their military career instructing Mountaineering skills. Many others that you mention are in our Camps History known by a few of us. Some of them are still circulated by story telling. There is a man named Ross Hall who is in the process of writing a book about the history of Camp Merrill and I hope that he also saw your posting, and your comments. You can reach him at iamrhall@yahoo.com I'm sure that he would love to hear from you, and get your stories for his book. I have heard many stories of the famous "Bear Dog", and I'm not really sure if some of them are as true as "Digger" Lee likes to tell them, but still, they are good stories.
