Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Bob Suchke Message: Reference: Colonel Elliott P. Sydnor. I neglected to mention that Col. Sydnor received the Distinguished Service Cross as well as many other awards for valor. He served as Director of the Ranger Department with the Infantry School at Fort Benning from June 1977 to May 1980. He was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame on June 18, 1992. Ranger Bud Sydnor died on August 15, 2014. |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Jim Regan Message: Recollect, from years ago, my Sergeant Major, MRC, tagged me to go to Fortress Benning, Ranger Dept., early '71. Jim, he said, I aint got time to be sittin' on boards. Go down there, do your magic, and get back here to work. Roger that Sergeant Major. Travelled down. There was a "Rep" from the Florida Camp, me, and the School Sergeant Major on he Board, (don't ask me names.) We had four Ranger Studs comin' before the Board. This was the "FINAL CUT" for graduation & Tab! The stuff we had to look at; Peer evals, Reports of successes/and or failures, from the Ranger "Advisors/Lane Graders," and a chance to "eye ball" the STUD!!! A great experience for this "Seasoned Ranger!" Listen to these Studs. Can't remember the break out of the Studs, Officers/NCOs.All but ONE passed the Board UNANAMOUSALY!!! Has any one else had the opportunity to sit on that Board? Does the Board still exist? Maybe we can "Fix" some things w/ that BOARD!!! Jim RLTW/L&P |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: ron rice Message: i arrived at mrc in summer of 63 there was two permanent blds hq and mhall. nco club was one room the ri's built the other room and blowtorched and varnished that room. it was by the stream i cannot remember the name of the stream but we fished in it. the ranger students huts were tents stretched over wooden frames. toc bld was on side of hill on right before the mhall next bldg was patrol bldg for ri's. camp co was ltc george tassey. medic was sfc "doc" duncan. patrolling comm chief msg boggs others were myself, ssg septer, sgt t boggs, and others i cannot remember at this time. rope comm msg e8 wolcott affectionately known as 8, msg delso, msg colombo ssg rumph all non rangers but excellent mountaineers i was transfered to the rope comm w/sgt don stafford, sfc h phillips,sfc j crump, sgt j tibbit, sfc a howard. at that time i know igger lee was there but i do not remember in what capacity. After vietnam i went back to mrc. maj acre was camp co and was later kia in vn there was two bennets there, gary littrell, cpt lawrence dring, cpt marm sfc owens sfc rainwater. later a new camp co major shalikasvili "shalli" i became his camp operations nco. we had a small px run by ssg doyle. no commissary. civ eng manly mason, mr jackson and others. back in 63 our camp mascot was called "beardog" he is buried by the mhall. rope comm oic was cpt/maj woodworth affectionately called "chief" we had several cages w/wild animals i.e.,bob cat rattle snakes, copperheads etc. most of our classes were back to back when not we taught boy scouts, stafford and i did hand to hand combat for them. we actually used uncased bayonets and i inadvertenly put a 1/4 inch wound in his stomach and he promptly picked me up and through me in the lake. everyone was aghast except stafford. i had a lot of good times at mrc. oh yeah, i almost forgot to mention doug perry he was there also and many others i cannot bring to mind right now. |
