What an outstanding display of Honor to these inductees and to one of our own. It was this majestic performance that kept me from honoring Doug in my own way as it may have been construed as childish and inhuman. However, I know Doug would have understood. As a young ranger student in 1975 I faced Mt Yonah on an extremely cold and icy February day. Not particularly good at climbing, I was making my way up my assigned lane a the speed of frozen syrup. As I climbed I was pelted by increasing larger sizes of rocks and stones from above. And as I finaling got near the top I looked to see mt Ranger Instructor, Doug Perry about to heave a massive boulder at me. He laughed and explained that he was trying to make me a better Ranger. Years later I was to determine that he knew my kin here in Dahlonega and he was Watching out for me as I went through Ranger School. Doug and I have served together in law enforcement and now as Chairman and vice Chairman of the USMRA. Yesterday as I entered Building 4 I thought of placing small stones in my pocket and pelting Doug as he walked across the Stage, you know! , sort of watching out for him, but I just couldn't do it . However, Doug there are some small rocks and stones waiting on you when the time is right. Congratulations Doug , I am proud of you and although the rest of the world may have no clue how much this honor means, we, your brothers, know you deserve this and the Selection Board made the right choice. Ranger Perry, You Lead the Way Steve |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Joe Mattison Message: lastly then I'll leave the net for awhile...got some "Vets" to attend to in a little while....I can never forget the very early morning Helo rides out to Cavender CP for RI Change-over. Often times we would load up on what ever it was..."slicks" in my earlier years at Camp and "Hawks" later...but often we would load up while completely covered in fog. The Pilots would do the pre-flight start up checks, warm the bird and we would snuggle in and get ready for a few more minutes of "snooze" time while we were flown out to Cavender for the PI brief. The pilot would literally climb to altitude in almost a verticle climb to get up and out of the fog bank that we were in at Camp Merrill. Once he busted up and throught the fog cover, he's turn that aircraft north, and take us to Cavender....many times I remeber seeing nothing but mountain tops sticking up out of the thick fog and they were the only things that you could see with the rays of the rising sun. By the time we got to Cavender, the sun and burnt off all the fog and landing at the CP at Cavender wasn't a big deal due to much improved visibility. It sure was a pretty site to see. One I'll never forget. |
