Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: Tom Wilburn Message: First off, Doug was, and is still a great Soldier and always will be. Even his recording on his home phone is spoken in “Rangerese” so that the average civilian would be befuddled if he were to call to speak with Doug. Doug has many different demeanors depending on his present Company. Doug is a Soldier, a father, a grandfather, a husband, and a true friend to anybody with the surname of Ranger. Doug is always willing to help and usually the last one to ask for help. He is willing to share his home, his chow, and even his favorite hunting spot if you ask nicely. I do have to admit that I was reluctant when Doug told me a particularly funny story. Doug would sometimes work on the FTX staff or the equivalent and provide Ranger Instructors with chow as they withdrew from their night raids and ambushes. This was typically a couple of sandwiches specially prepared for the hard working Ranger Instructors. Doug told me he had put everything from Grass to cat food in the sandwiches that he would on occasion provide to the Ranger Instructors and they would consume in the darkness of their post mission patrol bases. I did not doubt this story knowing Doug’s demeanor, but imagine my surprise when I was in the Company of some Army Generals and senior officers recently and they began telling about this crazy Ranger Instructor named Sergeant Perry. Apparently Sergeant Perry had fed them grass sandwiches during their tours as young officers at Camp Frank D. Merrill and they did not realize the true contents until most of the sandwiches were consumed. When they turned to me and accusingly asked if I knew “Sergeant Perry”, I had to smile as I told them yep, and I am glad to call him my friend and Ranger buddy. The details of this incident have always been a "fog" to us who later served at the Camp, and probably some of the details changed over time. I know that the mountain top was Akin Mountain, because it recovered a very small piece of wreckage when I "free legged" back in 1979. That was the first time I ever heard the story. Thanks for the details. I hope that this one is captured in Ross's book, for it's accuracy and posterity. Joe |

Posted: 12/31/1969 Name: ted tilson Message: hey al, so far myself, steve bishop, peewee, and joe amerling have committed to the f/f and the breakfasts. steve said the f/f was contingent upon someone in the 'know', being you, i guess, going to the fish hatchery for the trout, about 300 or so. all it takes is for someone to take charge, (like doug p.) i recommend steve bishop, but steve hawk should appoint him or whoever wants the job, because my giving orders days are finished! i'll be happy to be a worker bee whenever i can and with enough lead-time to prepare.....am waiting a decision with bated breath....rltw ted tilson |
