Born on May 2nd, 1968, in Brazil, Indiana, SGM William L. Harris was the son of Bill and Ludema Harris. He graduated from Northview High School in 1986 and promptly entered the United States Army on April 11, 1989. Upon completion of initial training, SGM Harris was assigned to 107th Military Intelligence Battalion in Ft. Ord, California, where he served as a Senior Scout and Assistant Surveillance Team Leader. William went on to serve 25 years in the Army with elite units. In November of 1991, after completion of the Ranger Course, SGM Harris was assigned to Charlie Company, 3d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served as a Team Leader and Squad Leader. During his time at 75th Ranger Regiment, he also served in HHC 75th Ranger Regiment. In November 1997, he was assigned to the United States Army Special Operations Command with 1st SFOD-D, where he served as a Team Member, Assistant Team Sergeant, Team Sergeant, First Sergeant, Instructor/Writer, Operations Sergeant Major, and culminated his career as the Research and Development Sergeant Major. SGM Harris deployed to Iraq in support of Operations IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN, and to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. His various awards include a Purple Heart and 6 Bronze stars, one with V device. Following his years of service, William concluded his career at the FBI Ballistic Research Facility in Huntsville, Alabama. In addition to being a committed member of our nation's military, William was a devoted husband, loving father, and attentive friend. These were duties that he took just as seriously. As a husband, William cherished his wife Sheri with whom he knew he had found a perfect match. They shared an unwavering strength of spirit with which they built a wonderful life and family. As a father, William always encouraged his children to be their truest selves and reveled in their accomplishments. As a friend, William was equal parts steadfast supporter, trusted advisor, and quick-witted jokester. He meant many things to many different people, with the common thread being that he made your life better. SGM William Lewis Harris passed away at age 57 on November 26, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama. |
