Message: Deep Dark Secret! In the early days, it was difficult to get enlisted instructors for the Mountain Camp. Airborne Ranger (Tabbed or Scrolled) NCOs with combat experience were wanted but seldom available. One reason was that the married ones saw no decent housing for their families and the unmarried ones preferred Benning or Elgin. So, to make sure that sufficient instructors were available, exceptions were made. When I was a RI on the Long Range Patrolling Committee, we were authorized 12 NCO Instructors. What we had was 8 people. Five were either tabbed or scrolled, one was an Airborne NCO with combat experience and the last two were Sp/4 Keohane & Pfc Hamilton. Both Fish & Hamilton managed to get slots for Ranger School & got their tabs. I did not get a slot and was sent to Berlin.
